Phoenix co-owner Gareth Morgan rapt with team performance in India
The Wellington Phoenix have been touring India for the last 5 days in a busy pre-season schedule. The Phoenix have played two games so far with very good performances despite hot conditions, torrential downpours and on testing playing surfaces.
Game one versus United Sikkim FC at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium saw the Nix get up 3 goals to nil. The score line flattered the opposition with the Phoenix missing several scoring opportunities in the first half thanks to some solid goal keeping by Korean goalkeeper Yoon Tae.
Game Two against Shillong saw virtually all of the club’s new apprentices make appearances and they equipped themselves well. With only five of the Pros on the field at one stage it was a real baptism of fire for the young guns. The game was won 5-2 with striker Jeremy Brockie scoring four times and apprentice Tom Biss once.
"The opportunity to do some pre-season touring in tough conditions is a just what the team (Wellington Phoenix) need leading up to the beginning of the season" says Wellington Phoenix co-owner Gareth Morgan who is touring with the team in India, “and to have all our apprentices participating like this is just fantastic for building the depth at the Club”.
"It's tough out there. The locals are very spirited and the pitch conditions here can only be described as pretty crappy".
The Wellington Phoenix have two more games to go. Games 3 and 4 will be in Shillong. Gareth Morgan is blogging most days whilst over in India and Phoenix fans can stay up to date by visiting Gareth Morgan's blog (www.garethsworld.com) or tune into his Facebook page.
