The Black Seeds and Electric Wire Hustle showcased some of the best of NZ contemporary music at The New Zealand Music Commission showcase held at Batschkapp in Frankfurt on August 23th.
The show kicked off four days of music that is part of The NZ at Frankfurt programme of events – a year-long showcase of the best of New Zealand arts, culture and cuisine in Frankfurt and across Germany, which culminates in the prestigious Frankfurt Book Fair in October, where New Zealand is the Guest of Honour.
Gary Fortune, International Manager at the NZ Music Commission said “Both Electric Wire Hustle and the Black Seeds played to a packed house on a balmy Frankfurt night at the legendary 35 year-old Batschkapp venue.
The night ended on the street outside the venue with an impromptu haka performed by the NZ contingent leaving the cheering crowd with a unique taste of New Zealand.”
Myele Manzanza (Electric Wire Hustle) said “It's an honor to be able to represent NZ at Frankfurt as part of Electric Wire Hustle alongside The Black Seeds at the Music Commission showcase tonight! NZ is very fortunate to have initiatives such as these to help bring Aotearoa's wealth of musical talent to international audiences that are loving it!”
Daniel Weetman (The Black Seeds) had this to say before the showcase "Its really great to be involved in the representation of New Zealand here in Frankfurt. We have had an amazing tour of UK and Europe so far, and tonight it will be fun to perform alongside our friends Electric Wire Hustle. A huge thanks to NZMC for all there support of NZ Music overseas."
The weekend saw Museumsuferfest being held in Frankfurt. Performing over the three days are NZ acts: Warren Maxwell (Little Bushman, Trinity Roots), Myele Manzanza and the Estobhan Eclectic, Flip Grater, Funkommunity, Kara Gordon, Shapeshifter, Nick Hohepa and Donna Dean. In true kiwi fashion there will be a jam session hosted by Warren Maxwell and Flip Grater to close the contemporary music section of New Zealand’s Museumsuferfest.
The Black Seeds have sold over 125,000 albums worldwide and have a live show that has been filling dance floors around the world for over a decade. The band are currently on a European tour, in support of their new album Dust and Dirt.
Electric Wire Hustle's unique sound fuses modern hip-hop, psychedelic and soul, challenging genre boundaries and preconceptions. Their debut self-titled album released internationally on BBE Records, and Every Waking Hour in New Zealand, has received love from many of the world’s top DJs and selectors.
The band is also currently touring Europe.
Both bands will also play the Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungry - one of the biggest festivals on the planet attracting over 300,000 people over the weeklong event.
The showcase was hosted by The New Zealand Music Commission’s Outward Sound programme. Outward Sound provides assistance for market development initiatives and to encourage the entry of New Zealand music and musicians into global markets.
