Kingsford Called Into World Champs Race
Tirau’s Rebecca Kingsford has had the call up to pack her gear bag, bike and fly to Stockholm to play a part in New Zealand's efforts at the ITU World Mixed Teams Championship on Monday morning NZT.
22 year old Kingsford has flown in from her European base to replace Kate McIlroy, the Wellingtonian suffered a calf injury in the run of yesterday's ITU World Tri Series race at the same venue.
Tri NZ National Coach Greg Fraine says it is a great opportunity for Kingsford.
"Kate's injury is not too bad but there is a risk that it may not survive the run and we can't take that chance in a team’s race such as this. We looked at flying Andrea (Hewitt) in but there was no guarantee that she would make it in time.
"We have made the decision to bring in Rebecca, it provides a great chance for her to challenge herself in the top tier. She has a great attitude and will deal with anything that is thrown at her and I have no doubt will put aside the uncontrollables and cope in this environment.
"The rest of the team is rallying around and will welcome Rebecca into the team and do all they can to put her in a great position in the race."
