The winner and 47 finalisits for the 2012 Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition have been announced.

The Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition found 364 songs from Kaitaia to Mosgiel pouring into Play It Strange. Head judge Jordan Luck was in awe: “so many of those songs stopped me in my tracks. I played them again and again. The standard is increasing exponentially!”

A huge congratulations to PETRA BULLOCK from Takapuna Grammar in Auckland for taking first place with her song ‘Is This Love’.

First prize includes a $1,000 NZ Rockshop retail credit voucher from the NZ Rockshop and a day in a recording studio to record the song which will go on the 2012 CD with the other 47 finalists.

Congratulations also to Papatoetoe High School and their music teachers Louise O’Neill and Kirsten Saunders as well as Manurewa High School and teacher Tim Randle – plus their wonderful songwriting students, for jointly taking the pwc Play It Strange School of the Year Award. They both have four songs on the upcoming 48 track CD. Both schools will receive a $1,500 NZ Rockshop retail credit voucher.

The David Richwhite Lyric Award, this year judged by Don McGlashan and the Cheese On Toast Award for best alternative song will be announced at a later date.

Petra had a surprise visit at her home today from Play It Strange Trust CEO Mike Chunn where she learned the great news before dashing off to perform at a concert.

“Petra can add this prize to the Matariki Songwriting Award she won earlier this year. We have watched her grow from a young ambitious songsmith to a masterful songwriter”, said Mike Chunn.
