Burger Wellington Blog To Get A Bloke’s Mouth View
He’ll count his chips, reveal his sauces, but promises he won’t throw a pattie –Jeremy Taylor is going to get Absolutely Burgered.
Visa Wellington On a Plate’s battle of the burger is set to get a man’s perspective, with Wellington musician and writer Jeremy Taylor putting his body and sanity on the line for this year’s Burger Wellington blog.
Since its inception, Burger Wellington has seen a Wellington writer charged with the onerous task of consuming dozens of burgers in as many days in a bid to support, excite and divide the voting public as they help festival organisers to find the region’s ultimate burger.
In 2010, journalist Greer McDonald made her way through 27 of 33 burgers for Burger She Wrote, which she subsequently described as “gastronomic hell”. Last year’s 17 Dates, 17 Burgers saw Delaney Mes make national headlines as she gorged a burger a day while gauging opinions on dating etiquette.
In his inaugural Absolutely Burgered post for WordontheStreet.co.nz, Taylor says it’s about time this serious subject was analysed from a male’s perspective.
“The ladies have done their bit over the last couple of years, but it’s now time to see how a bloke will fare. I’m totally up for it. I have been training hard for this event. This is my Burger Olympics, and I’m in it to win it”.
Taylor – who writes The Omnivore blog for Stuff.co.nz – and is on the record as a “very hungry man”, which will come in handy as he sets his pen and palate to this iconic task. While there are a record 63 entries in Burger Wellington this year, Taylor will dissect “24 or thereabouts” burgers over the course of New Zealand’s largest and tastiest culinary festival.
“I am going to eat as many burgers as is humanly possible in that time window. I am going to assess each of them objectively. I want delicious meat, well-balanced sauces and accompaniments, and an empathetic bun.
“I want the ratio of meat, to filling, to sauce, to bun to take on some sort of mystical, perfect quality. I want these burgers to be transcendent.
“And I will atone for my burger excess by swimming more lengths at the pool.”
Visa Wellington On a Plate Festival Co-director Sarah Meikle says customers are invited to rate Burger Wellington entries by text vote over the course of the festival.
“The five eateries with the highest average score will then battle it out at a cook off in a Le Cordon Bleu kitchen, where Jeremy will join a panel of partially expert judges charged with ruling the ultimate winner.”
