Press release: Q Walks Fast
As first-time Olympian Quentin Rew (28) walks his fastest in the 50km race walk on Saturday, August 11, his friends will be joining him from half a world
away on a Wellington treadmill at 8pm (NZT).
Rew, known as “Q”, has a devoted following back in New Zealand, in part from his University of Otago days.
Q started his athletics career in Wellington as an avid middle/long-distance runner and, after switching codes to race
walking, is now a champion of the sport both on and off the course. He’s appeared on The Crowd Goes Wild where he talks
about his target of finishing in the top 16 at the Olympics and therefore having to shave six minutes off his personal
best (his appearance is here).
His Wellington-based supporters will gather from 7.45pm on Saturday at The Realm in Haitaiti to share a drink and scream
at a big screen to edge him onto victory. More importantly, there will also be a treadmill where Q’s loyal supporters
will walk 50km “alongside” Q. An Auckland Chapter is also being established, and treadmills from both locations will be
connected online via Skype.
