theaudience July Winner Announced
In July theaudience.co.nz continued to move from
strength to strength, with 500 artists using the site, over
400 released tracks, close to 700 unreleased tracks and more
than 100,000 website visitors in just over 2 months, the
website is a valuable addition to the New Zealand music
industry.
Appealing to a wide range of musicians, bands
and New Zealand music fans the website attracts visitors
from as far away as Romania and the Philippines, all with
one thing in common - discovering new music. These visitors
have all been streaming, sharing, downloading and voting for
their favourite artists and there's been some fierce
competition this month, particularly between the top two,
Marc Pritchard and Lisa Crawley.
Despite
the neck-and-neck dash to the finish line, theaudience.co.nz is proud to announce
that Lisa Crawley is the second recipient of the NZ
On Air 'Wild Card' Making Tracks grant, finishing in the #1
position at midnight on 31 July. Her song 'What Would I
Give' was the most popular 'unreleased' track on the Focus
Chart for the month of July on theaudience.co.nz, and you can listen to
her winning track here: http://www.theaudience.co.nz/lisa-crawley/what-would-i-give-demo/
Lisa
Crawley will be familiar to many, particularly those who are
(or have recently been) involved in the live music scene in
Auckland. She is a multi-instrumentalist, most notably for
her unique talents on the omnichord, and is also currently a
finalist for this year's APRA Silver Scroll Awards for her
track 'Blind Eyes'.
Winning the NZ On Air 'Wild Card'
funding means Lisa receives $10,000 towards making a video
and recording her track, 'What Would I Give'. We're very
pleased to be able to award this grant - which wouldn't be
possible without funding from NZ On Air - and the terrific
support from everyone who has come on board to discover new
music and be part of theaudience online community.
As
with last month, announcing a winner also marks the
beginning of a new chart month on www.theaudience.co.nz. Who will be in
the running for August? Head to www.theaudience.co.nz to discover new
music and have your say.

International and Industry Action
A
shortlist of 20 in the running for this year's APRA Silver
Scroll award for best New Zealand song of the past year has
been whittled down to just five finalists. They
are:
* Getaway Tonight: the psychedelic pop
trip by Opossom, the post-Mint Chicks solo
vehicle of Kody Nielson.
* Hibernate: the fragile lovelorn ballad
by singer-songwriter Lydia Cole from her
debut.
* Girl in Stilettos: the chart-topping pop
song by Annah Mac.
* Everything to Me: sultry electronic R&B
track by Lips written by keyboardist Stephanie
Brown.
* State Houses By the River: the timeless
folk rock tale by Adam McGrath of Lyttelton band
The Eastern.
The songs are voted on by the
8000-strong membership of APRA, the organisation which
represents the interests of local songwriters. The awards
will be given out at a ceremony at the Auckland Town Hall on
September 13 (and streamed live here on nzherald.co.nz,
click here to add to your calander), where various local
acts will cover the five Silver Scroll finalists' songs and
the Sounz and Maioha Award winners, under the guest musical
directorship of Jon Toogood. And another influential
local songwriter - or group of songwriters - will also be
honoured by being the 2012 APRA inductee into the New
Zealand Music Hall Of Fame, following in the footsteps of
the organisation's past inductees Hello Sailor, The
Fourmyula, Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns, the Topp
Twins, and Jordan Luck. Read more...
Decisions from NZ On
Air’s July 2012 Making Tracks funding round have been
announced, with 24 new music projects to be funded from a
field of 103 applications. Twelve are $10,000 grants for
recording a song and making a music video to back up the
release of the song and 12 are $6,000 grants for making a
music video only. This means NZ On Air has funded 345
projects since the Making Tracks scheme was launched in July
last year (from 1,319 applications). Decisions are based on
the broadcast, music and audience merits of the songs that
have been submitted. An independent panel of broadcasting
and music professionals makes the recommendations. The list
of 24 projects for July can be found here: http://kiwihits.co.nz/funding/decisions
The
winner of theaudience Wild Card Making Tracks
grant for July is announced above, and the next MakingTracks
funding round closes at 5.00pm on Wednesday 01 August.
Applications can be made online at www.kiwihits.co.nz.

Media Group is pleased to congratulate the following artists
on their recent achievements:
Hot new Reggae signing
SWISS has been going from strength to strength in the
short time he s been on the scene in New Zealand, and his EP
Mr Slow Wind debuted in the Top 40 US iTunes Reggae chart
and the Top 10 NZ PopiTunes chart a mere two days after its
release. His debut single 'Slow Wind' was the most requested
track at NZ Urban radio, and new single 'Blue Bayou' is hot
on its heels, seeing SWISS literally mobbed by new fans at
each of his live performances.
Home Brew has
successfully completed (and survived) a SOLD OUT six-date
New Zealand Tour around the country. Fans have come out in
droves down the line to see Home Brew perform tracks from
their critically acclaimed double album, which debuted at
#1. Home Brew now has a short break before taking their live
show to Australian fans throughout early
August.
Concord Dawn has had over a staggering
10,000 downloads of his new album Air Chrysalis which was
released for FREE only a month ago. Off the back of his
recent NZ tour, Concord Dawn is also set to hit Australia
performing his new album live on a six-date tour later this
month.
And David Dallas fans are in for a treat in
August when he's set to reveal an exciting new project.
He'll be performing at the Casio CENTRAL store launch after
party on Thursday 2 August at Fort St Union before heading
off on a three-month tour of the United States with US
artists Aer and Yonas starting in September. David s new
album Falling Into Place is also set for NZ release in
November.
On top of these exciting achievements, FMG is
set to reveal an exciting new project from Aaradhna
in mid-August starting with her first single 'Wake Up'. The
original Polynesian princess has completely shaken up her
look and sound, and delivered an outstanding new album - in
a style she calls retro/metro - set for release later this
year. It's her most honest and exceptional album to date -
definitely worth the wait. https://www.facebook.com/FrequencyMediaGroup?ref=ts
New
release fanfare
New Way Home is releasing
their self-produced and self-recorded full length album
Mirrors on August 10. Featuring musicians from
Blindspott to Sommerset, New Way Home
has always been its own beast with such varied backgrounds.
Being handpicked by the likes of Slipknot,
Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, and Machine
Head to play in front of large stadium crowds is
testament to their originality, appeal and musicianship. A
rough demo was released on the internet for the song
'Chrysalis' just before album recording began. It won song
of the month on sevenstring.org and received an 8/10 from a
Roadrunner Records A&R scout on www.signmeto.com. The demo also abruptly
went to #1 on both the metal, and alternative metal charts
at www.soundclick.com and stayed there for
nearly a month out of over 120,000 songs in the worldwide
charts. The final album version has just recently had over
1300 views in the first week since it's release on youtube.
You can watch 'Chrysalis' here. The band are working
hard to promote the album, embarking on a nationwide tour
with The Heavy Metal Ninjas (starting tonight -
August 2 - in Christchurch) and a mini tour with English
heavyweights Architects (September 21 and 22). https://www.facebook.com/NewWayHome
Mid 2010, Nick Roberts, head of the music dept at Kaiapara College, came into Red Room Studio's with a demo CD simply marked with a Sharpie pen 'KJ's'. Nick handed the disk to Triple A Producer Te Matera, and said 'you need to listen to this'! To cut a long story short, The KJ's (Kaiapara Jammers), good friends and ex school mates, create a blend of rock, with dubby undertones, that has that 'NZ sound', whilst still remaining individual, capturing the angst and joy of being in your late teenags/early twenties, freedom with the complexities of youth. The music is made for driving in Summer with all of the windows wound down and the roof open. The band have been gigging relentlessly throughout the North Island and have just secured a number of slots for festivals over the summer. Kaipara Jammers are an act with a great live following who are starting to make a name for themselves ahead of what will be a breakout summer. http://www.aaarecordscom/kaipara-jammers/
Rumour and obsession have kept the legend alive. But 35 years later, the myth is reborn. The 70's synth prog classic, Immram's The Voyage of the Corvus Corrone returns; re-mastered, re-packaged and re-imagined. Escape Artists Recordings are proud to announce the re-release of this most mysterious of albums. Escape Artists Recordings was in the process of setting up when Paul McLaney was contacted by a founding member of the outfit, and mutual friend of electronic composer Rhian Sheehan. Paul and his Escape Artists co-founders agreed Immram would be the perfect flagship release for their new label, embodying as it does the themes of imagination and mystery they were keen for the new label to explore. Given the mysterious origins of the project next to nothing is known of its creation other than its electronic aesthetic and use of late 70's synthesizers. Escape Artist co-founder Module (Jeramiah Ross) has remixed the re-release. Lovingly reproduced in a 12" x12" book format Immram includes the remixed CD and a rather amazing 57-page book with outstanding illustrations detailing the myth and legends surrounding The Voyage of Corvus Corrone. http://www.voyageofthecorvuscorrone.com/
On
the live front
On August 24th Iva Lamkum
releases her debut album Black Eagle. A songs-as-storybook
collection of half a decade's day-to-day experiences, Black
Eagle consists of a series of deeply personal, yet
universally relatable meditations on family, hard-work,
internal conflict, the loved and the loveless. Drawing
stylistically on elements of roots reggae, folk, rock, funk,
indie and beyond, the album repositions Iva, an artist oft
viewed under a neo soul light, within a borderless musical
world. To celebrate the release of the album, Iva is
embarking on her first national tour, kicking off the tour
in Iva's hometown Wellington with a massive album release
party at San Fransisco Bathhouse on Friday August 24. For
this special gig only, many of the artists who appeared on
the album will be performing on stage with Iva and her full
band: guests such as Aaradhna, Bella Kalolo, Stephanie
Paris, Winnie Baxter and Lisa Tomlins. As well as
if that wasn't enough, the line up also includes DJ
Ayesha, Kemara Fuimaono, Jean Pompey and DJ Don
Luchito. The tour then travels to Auckland, Raglan,
Leigh, Christchurch and Dunedin. https://www.facebook.com/ivalamkummusic
