National Book Awards Announced
The overall winners of the New Zealand Post Book Awards were announced at a gala ceremony held at the Auckland Museum last night.
Two titles from Te Papa Press, New Zealand’s unique museum publisher, were among the five finalists in the Illustrated Non-fiction category. Publisher Claire Murdoch was thrilled to have two titles being recognised in this way.
“Both books – New Zealand Film: An Illustrated History, edited by Diane Pivac, Frank Stark, Lawrence McDonald and published in association with The Film Archive, and Whatu Kākahu: Māori Cloaks edited by Awhina Tamarapa – are terrific examples of how we can share knowledge through publishing,” says Claire. “Each of these books represents an intellectual partnership with our creative communities, and gives voice to taonga held by dozens of contributors and scholars.”
Readers can also find content from “Whatu Kakahu” available in a rich web resource, Kākahu online, and in the exhibition Kahu Ora Living Cloaks at Te Papa from now until 21 October. Entry to the exhibition is free.
The Illustrated Non-fiction category was won by “New Zealand’s Native Trees” by John Dawson and Rob Lucas which also went on to win the prestigious New Zealand Post Book of the Year Award.
