More A finals for Kiwi Under-23 rowers
A fantastic day on the water for New Zealand’s Under-23 rowers in Trakai, Lithuania, saw two more boats qualify for the A finals and four more progress to the main semis with heat wins or top three finishes.
Abbey Green, Georgia Perry, Grace Prendergast and Robyn Munro led all the way in the repechage for the women's straight fours and their impressive six second margin at the line ahead of the USA marked them as dark horses for the main A final.
The women's quadruple scull of Olivia Loe, Genevieve Behrent, Lucy Spoors and Linda Matthews delivered the same result in their repechage - getting their noses ahead in the second 500 metres and never looking back. They finished ahead of Romania, Russia, France and Switzerland to qualify directly for the main final.
Nathan Flannery and Hayden Cohen (brother of elite world champion Nathan) were comfortable winners of their heat and moved to the semi-final of the men's heavyweight double sculls along with second placed Lithuania from their heat.
Lightweight women's double scull Georgia Hammond and Sophie Mackenzie also progressed to the semi-final with a heat win - having battled their way through to the front from third place at the 500 metre mark.
The men's lightweight four sneaked into their semi-final too, with a third place result in the heat behind Poland and Austria with the first three going through. Finian Scott, Adam Ling, James Hunter and Toby Cunliffe-Steel were comfortably ahead of the Canadians in fourth and will be looking to step up a gear in the semi-final to secure an A final spot.
The men's quadruple scull of Giacomo Thomas, Jeffrey Francis, Jonathan Wright and Karl Manson enjoyed a race long battle with the Ukraine as both crews pulled clear of Norway, Switzerland and the USA to secure the automatic semi-final qualifying spots. The Kiwi crew were almost two seconds to the good at the finish line.
