Juniors show off their skills at Cardrona

Some of New Zealand’s youngest snow sports stars have kicked off this season’s competitions at Cardrona Alpine Resort today (Wednesday) pulling off tricks like pros.

Judges had tough decisions to make as competitors gave it their all in the first competition of this year’s Calci Yum Kids Series.

Cardrona Alpine Resort Sales and Marketing Manager Nadia Ellis said it’s fantastic to see so many young stars coming through.

“We have been blown away by the talent of these kids. These guys were pulling off tricks in the slopestyle that would impress many grown-ups,” she said.

“Mitchell Davern, in the Rippers 10-11-year-old age group, managed to wow us all with a backflip on the course and scored him the ‘best snowboard trick’ title.

“Manu Barnard’s impressive 270 onto a rail scored him the ‘best ski trick’ in the Rippers age group.”

It's been perfect blue-skies at the ski area these school holidays, and today was no different, with the good conditions attracting more than 50 competitors aged from just four-years-old up to 11.

The Kids Cup took place on the custom-built Weston’s Park course on the McDougall’s trail.

The course included tabletop jumps, boxes and rails for beginner and intermediate abilities. Judges scores were based on the variety of tricks, execution and technical difficulty.

Ms Ellis said the kids were kept well fueled with lots of Calci Yum and the lucky winners from the day took home some great prizes from Dragon, Rossignol, WhipperSnapper and Lonestar Wanaka.

“It was an awesome day and we look forward to hosting the second event in the series on 4 August. This time it will include a gravity cross as well as the slopestyle competition,” she said.

“Hopefully we can get Pengi back out on the course to entertain the kids – but it will be hard for him to top the 180 he pulled over a jump today.”
