Sensational Singing Over The Sounds July 5, 2012
Some of the most glorious music from opera will float over Queen Charlotte Sound during the weekend of July 20-22.
Bay Of Many Coves, the only five star resort in the Marlborough Sounds, has engaged three talented singers from The NBR New Zealand Opera to provide guests with a richly evocative programme of operatic solos, duets and trios.
While opera is generally associated with magnificent theatres around the world, the resort provides a setting as impressive as any opera house with no need for elaborate staging as it offers a beautiful, natural backdrop.
The three soloists – Morag McDowell, Emma Roxburgh and Jared Holt – will provide guests with an Opera Lovers’ Weekend and present some of the most passionate and impressive music from composers such as Puccini, Verdi, Handel, Gounod and Rossini.
Their programme, covering three days, includes one of the most famous soprano arias of all time - O mio babbino caro from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi - where the heroine implores her father to let her marry.
Other famous arias include Deh vieni from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Una voce poca fa from Rossini’s Barber of Seville and the dramatic Di Provenza il mar from La Traviata by Verdi.
Among the duets are Sull’aria from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Rossini’s hugely entertaining Cat Duet, the romantic Love Unspoken from Franz Lehar’s operetta, The Merry Widow and, one of the most haunting of all operatic compositions, the trio Soave sia il vento from Così fan tutte by Mozart.
The soloists also identify in song with the luxury resort. The famous Lakmé duet describes nature at its most glorious while Ombra mai fu by Handel pays tribute to a tree.
Opera was the music of the day and the soloists also present two contemporary numbers which are the music of the moment – the Lloyd Webber duet All I Ask Of You and Jeanine Tesori’s brilliant Girl in 14G which includes a touch of Mozart’s Queen Of the Night.
Co-owner of Bay of Many Coves, Murray McCaw, saw the incredible synergy between glorious music and the idyllic resort and brought them both together in the Opera Lovers’ Weekend.
To ensure guests enter the spirit of the weekend, Bay of Many Coves is providing the finest of Italian food. They’ll be welcomed with a Bellini cocktail on their arrival and the centerpiece will be a six course Opera Lovers’ Lunch prepared by Executive Chef Hannes Bareiter on the Saturday.
The soloists will entertain both on the Friday night and during Saturday’s lunch, farewelling the guests from the balcony overlooking the wharf on Sunday.
“We intend the Opera Lovers’ Weekend to appeal not just to opera buffs but to those who would love to be introduced to opera in the perfect setting of Bay of Many Coves,” Murray says. “The weekend will turn back the clock to a time when food and wine were an integral part of celebrating the latest Verdi or Puccini masterpiece.”
The Opera Lovers’ Weekend is one of a number of exclusive events that have been held this year by Bay of Many Coves resort.
Prices for the Opera Lovers’ Weekend start from $810 per person.
