CPIT calls for artists to commemorate loss
The CPIT Council has announced a new art commission to commemorate the Christchurch earthquakes and to specifically remember and acknowledge the 28 people connected with CPIT who lost their lives on 22 February 2011 when the most devastating earthquake struck.
The council is seeking submissions from CPIT’s arts community (CPIT graduates, past and present staff members) for responses to events that have forever changed our city’s history, landscape and people. The selected artwork will be erected at CPIT’s Madras Street campus and the artist will be awarded $2,500 along with a $25,000 budget for construction.
“The years 2010 and 2011 have left an indelible trace on the history, landscape and people of Christchurch. During this time over 10,000 earthquakes have shaken the city’s heart and soul and we will continue to count the cost as individuals and as a community for years to come,” CPIT Chief Executive Kay Giles said.
“One of the ways that we as a society honour these events, as well as heal and remember is through the installation of public art. The artwork that is selected by the judging panel will be a lasting and very appropriate tribute to those who lost their lives.”
The judging panel consists of Giles, a member of the CPIT Council, a member of CPIT’s Creative Industries and a member of the Christchurch Art Gallery’s curatorial team. A grassy area next to CPIT’s Rakaia Centre has been reserved for the artwork.
Artists have until 1 August 2012 to submit initial concepts. The selected artwork will be completed onsite before 22 February 2013. For a full brief please contact julie.humby@cpit.ac.nz.
