Waimea Yamaha Boys Win the Day

JUNE 30, 2012: The three-rider Waimea College Rockstar Yamaha squad dominated the inaugural Tasman Secondary Schools Motocross Championships near Nelson last weekend.

Riders Bradley Biggs, Liam Hutton and Isaac Millson took top honours with another Yamaha rider, Nelson College’s Ethan Bruce, the only individual to really threaten the Waimea trio’s dominance.

Cross-country ace Bruce (Yamaha YZ125) was the quickest individual, setting the fastest lap times at the event, but it was Biggs – who finished 1-1-2-1 in his four 125-250cc class races – who came out on top.

Biggs finished the day with 97 points, while team-mate Hutton (85 points) and Bruce (78 points) completed the podium in the premier 125-250cc class.

“I managed to finish eighth overall in this class,” said the 14-year-old Millson, who finished 8-8-6-7 in his four outings. “It was pretty hard for us as a team to get enough points to beat all the other teams because we were all riding in the same class and were taking points off one another.”

There were also races for big wheel 85cc/150cc bikes, small wheel 85cc/150cc bikes and separate classes also for the girls and farm bike riders.
“The track was awesome,” said Millson (Yamaha YZ125). “It was wet at the start of the day but soon dried out.

Former New Zealand No.3 motocross rider Bryan Heaphy, who set up the track with fellow MotoX Events rider Dan Shallcrass, said the track held up well considering the weather had made the track so bad that the digger got stuck when they were still working on the track.

"With the deluge we had on Saturday night, when we turned up on Sunday the track was almost perfect because it drains so well. It was brilliant; a really good day. There was absolutely no pressure on the riders. They could just turn up and ride their bikes, even kids that had little experience in motocross got around the track well."
