Lions Clubs award our most precious asset

Lions Clubs New Zealand were so impressed by the nominations submitted for their youth campaign Heads Up for Kids they have decided to award all ten finalists, instead of the usual three.

The nationwide campaign, which collects old money and foreign currency for the benefit of youth, runs a yearly nomination programme through its social media channels and invites the public to nominate young people from their community who they believe would benefit from a Heads Up for Kids Scholarship.

Founder of Heads Up for Kids and Lions Club member Simon Hayes said that all ten students were worthy and he believed they should all be recipients of Heads Up for Kids funding.

“Youth are our most precious asset and we need to support them,” Mr Hayes said.

“All these students are exactly who Heads Up for Kids was created to fund, good kids who have a positive attitude toward learning and their community,

“There’s Harmony Heke, who despite relocating from Christchurch following the earthquakes, has settled into her new Te Aroha home where she maintains top grades, is a Kapa Haka leader and can often be found tutoring the younger members of the group in her own time; and Jessica Drysdale, a member of the Reporoa Young Lions, who has raised funds for numerous causes including Samoa Heart and Red Puppy Appeal,

“It’s important these great young people are recognised and given opportunities that boost their confidence and provide a springboard for them to grow into great New Zealanders of the future,” Said Mr Hayes.

Heads Up for Kids Scholarships include funding to attend an outdoor education programme such as the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre and The Spirit of Adventure. This year Fastway Couriers, the campaign’s official courier sponsor, donated an iPad3 and school stationery vouchers to the scholarship pool.

Heads Up for Kids collects all old New Zealand money and all foreign currency. This can be taken to any Resene store, selected New World supermarkets or by calling 0800 OLD MONEY to have a Lions Club member collect.

The recipients of the Scholarship Awards are:

1st Award iPad 3 and funding to attend OPC, Spirit of Adventure or $500 to an approved education programme to Harmony Heke, Aroha College
2nd Award $200 of Whitcoll’s vouchers and funding to attend OPC, Spirit of Adventure or $500 to attend an approved education programme to Durga la Budthoki of Fielding High School
3rd Award funding to attend OPC, Spirit of Adventure or $500 to attend an approved education programme to Anthony Guptill of New Plymouth Boys College
