New World Warkworth and Robin Brooke Continue Charity Support
Robin Brooke says New World Warkworth is continuing to support the Duffy Books in Homes programme.
Brooke, a Duffy Books in Homes board member and father of four, says he encourages his own children to read and that education is the greatest gift we
can give our children.
Unfortunately many children are not so lucky says Brooke and the charity aims to address this inequality.
Founded by the Alan Duff Charitable Foundation the Duffy Books in Homes programme is a literacy scheme aimed at breaking the cycle of ‘booklessness’ among children at low decile schools
throughout New Zealand, says Brooke.
Since its inception the programme has distributed more than seven million books over the past 16 years.
Brooke who played representative rugby for Auckland and New Zealand’s premier rugby team says it was on the
international long-haul flights between matches he developed a love of reading.
“I found reading the most wonderful escape. It gave me that downtime away from the pressures of the game, where I could
just relax and let my mind take a break from it all.”
“I was thrilled to be able to help get books into the hands of children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to
experience the sheer joy and escape that reading can provide them,” says Brooke.
