Two for the money and Go! Go! Go!
UCOL Contemporary Music students from both Palmerston North and Wairarapa will band together for a concert later this month.
Programme Leader Kane Parsons says it’s an advantage for the students to be part of a multi-campus polytechnic. “They get to play with each other, learn from each other – and both groups get to make the most of the live performance experience.”
UCOL’s Contemporary Music programme started three years ago at the Palmerston North campus and this year at the Wairarapa campus. Whanganui UCOL will offer the programme from next semester.
The first-ever combination Palmerston North-Wairarapa concert will be held at the Globe Theatre on Friday 29 June at 8pm.
Kane says the concert will cover a wide range of music – including rock, Kiwi music, rock’n’roll and blues – studied by the students in the first semester this term. Fifty per cent will be original compositions created by the students, with the rest covers.
He says a good example of what to expect is a “brilliant” cover of the Kimbra song, Settle Down. “It’s sung as a five–part harmony, starting off a cappella with the band coming in behind. They’ve played it before at a gig at Murphy’s Law in Palmerston North. Big success! It really takes the song to new heights.”
Kane is excited about the two campuses joining forces for the first time and says the result is an impressive sound. “Not to be missed!” he says.
