New market for The Dowse, Sunday 8 July, 11am-3pm
The weekly Underground Market on Wellington’s waterfront is expanding to bring a “best of the best” art and craft market to The Dowse on the second Sunday of every month.
Normandale resident and market owner Helena Tobin says the initiative is in response to both stallholders and shoppers asking for more contemporary craft events outside of the Wellington CBD, and not on a Saturday.
“Many of our shoppers are parents who have Saturday commitments, and Sunday is the only day they have free for these events. Also many of our stallholders are Hutt based artists, so it makes sense to bring that local talent together in a local event.”
“We’re taking the best of our weekly market to our fans in the Hutt."
Shoppers will find a laid-back, Sunday brunch atmosphere. After enjoying a relaxed coffee at Cafe Reka, they can meander through the stalls of 50 emerging and established local artisans who specialise in producing soulful and stylish handmade wares.
It’s also a great chance to catch up on what’s on at The Dowse, exhibitions by New Zealand contemporary artists Ronnie van Hout and Judy Darragh would have opened the day before the market.
