High-flying Kiwi adventurer to take on the world with seven marathons in seven days
Kiwi adventurer and Air New Zealand pilot Mike Allsop is set to undertake an incredible mission to run seven marathons, in seven continents, in just seven days.
He aims to be the first New Zealander to complete the challenge, starting on 15 July 2012, with his mission taking him to points around the globe, including, The Falkland Islands, Santiago, Los Angeles, London, Casablanca and Hong Kong, concluding his marathon effort in New Zealand seven days later on 22 July.
Mike, an Air New Zealand Boeing 737 captain, achieved his first extreme milestone in 2007 when he climbed Mt Everest and will now attempt to match celebrated British explorer Sir Ranulph Fienne’s incredible 777 feat, with funds raised from his efforts going to New Zealand children’s charity KidsCan.
As part of his training for the 777 project, last month Mike completed one of the world’s highest altitude marathons, running 42km from the top of the mountain Kala Patthar (18,519 ft), via the Cho La pass, to the village of Pangboche in the Khumbu Valley region of Nepal.
Mike’s major sponsors Air New Zealand and Vodafone are proud supporters of his efforts and have provided the flights and technology required to make his 777 project a reality.
Air New Zealand Head of Sponsorship, James Gibson, says: “Mike is an exceptional Air New Zealander who challenges us all to look at ways within our own lives that we can push ourselves to achieve more.
“We think Mike will be a great ambassador for Air New Zealand on his flights around the world, while he’s completing his 777 project, and we look forward to celebrating with him at the finish line in Auckland.”
Vodafone Chief Marketing Officer, Greg Campbell, says: “We’re proud to be supporting Mike on this remarkable challenge, and to be working with ambitious brands like Air New Zealand to bring this unique opportunity to life. He’s an inspirational ambassador and is pushing the boundaries of what’s considered possible.
“We’ve supplied Mike with a Vodafone 7” Tablet and a Samsung Rugged handset. This – along with our fast, reliable network – will enable him to stay connected with family, friends and Facebook followers along the way.”
Julie Chapman , CEO and Founder of the KidsCan Charitable Trust says, “Mike’s marathon efforts will make a big difference to KidsCan and the money raised will go towards providing food, shoes and raincoats for children less fortunate than others in low decile schools around New Zealand. Mikes support will also help to raise the profile of KidsCan and the programmes we provide in the 218 schools we currently support.”
Mike’s mission will commence in the Falkland Islands on 14 July (local time) and will conclude in Auckland on 22 July. For further details and updates on Mike’s 777 project, see www.777project.co.nz or follow Mike on Facebook www.facebook.com/777projectpage.
