Matariki at the Night Market

12 June 2012

Matariki at the Night Market

As the Matariki Star cluster rises into our skies over the Heart of Tutanekai Street, our community and visitors to Rotorua will gather on Thursday 21 June to celebrate new beginnings and our unique place with food, dance and song at the Rotorua Night Market.

Matariki at the Night Market is part of the Fire and Ice Winter Festival supported by Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust and Rotorua District Council alongside Harcourt’s Outdoor Ice Rink on the Village Green.

Night Market manager Brigitte Nelson invites all to come together at the marketplace for an evening of free entertainment that showcases the unique culture of our city.

Waiariki Institute of Technology is opening with a welcome mihi whakatua and a special performance art piece with tutor Richard Kereopa and students. There will also be performances from Mitai Maori Village and Cook Islands Dance Group.

“During the evening a raft of activities will be taking place with Maori in Tourism Rotorua hosting ‘Join the Stars’ competition for the children and every child will receive bulbs to plant to celebrate.”

Ms Nelson says there are loads of prizes to be won and every 15 minutes Events & Venues will be giving away free passes to the Harcourt’s Outdoor Ice Rink. The prize pool also includes treatments From QE Spa and an evening at Mitai.
