From Toxins to Medicines

From Toxins to Medicines

We are often warned about eating unknown shellfish and exotic fungus. Experience has shown that these natural organisms sometimes contain toxins that can be lethal.

But there’s another side to this story. Some toxins, especially shellfish toxins, are available to be modified and become the basis for making medicines with which to treat hypertension, Alzheimers, cancer and a range of neurological and metabolic disorders. Research in this is going on in New Zealand by New Zealand scientists.

The guest this week In Conversation with Noel Cheer on Triangle Television is an active participant in this process: the Chair of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Auckland, Professor Margaret Brimble.

Triangle Television, Wednesday June 13th at 7:00pm and repeated Thursday June 14th at 12:30pm.

Triangle Television can be received in metropolitan Auckland on UHF Channels 41, 42 and 52.
Triangle Television is also transmitted live on streaming TV – a newly emerging technology – which can be received on broadband-connected computers throughout New Zealand and on Internet-connected television sets.
