Converse OUSA Battle of the Bands Winners Announced
 
The Otago University Student’s Association held the final of the Converse Battle of the Bands on Saturday night at the on campus bar Re:Fuel. The 40 bands vying for the title fought it out in 4 heats which attracted over 200 audience members each night Finally A Distant City were announced the overall winner, taking home a swag of prizes.
 
“We had a really strong line up of bands with a real diverse range of sounds,” said Koren Allpress, OUSA Events co-ordinator, “There were touches of the classic ‘Dunedin sound’ along with SKA, pop and heavy metal bands making a name for themselves to our crowds.”
 
The bands fought their way through 4 heats, with 2 winners securing places in the final from each. At the culmination of all of the heats 2 wildcards were picked to head into thefinal instead of the 1 that was planned for.
 
“The competition was so strong that after two bands tied they were both awarded a wildcard entry instead of just the one we’d usually have!” said Ms. Allpress, "The whole event was a closely fought battle and we're really appreciative of all the bands that entered and stoked for our winners."
 
The 10 finalists were:

A Distant City – 1st place, 4 members

Astro Children – 2nd place, 2 members

Abstract survival – 3rd place, 5 members

Prizes included:

1st $650 cash from OUSA, 8 hours recording time at Albany St Music Studios thanks to the University of Otago Music dept. 6 x printed band logo hoodies, 6 x printed band logo t shirts, 50 band logo badges from Konstruct Clothing, A year long sponsorship deal with Converse and $500 advertising campaign w Radio One.

2nd $350 cash from OUSA, $300 advertising campaign with Radio One.

3rd $150 cash from OUSA, $150 advertising campaign with Radio One.
