Calling all artists and sculptors
Lake Wanaka, May 23, 2012 – Treble Cone is calling for sculptors to sharpen their tools and creative flair for the
ZUMWOHL On Ice Sculpture competition at Treble Cone next month with $1,600 cash up for grabs.
Ten finalists will have two days to transform a metre block of ice into a winter masterpiece. The competition starts at
9am on Saturday 30 June and ends 2pm on Sunday 1 July. The sculptured work will remain on display around Treble Cone’s
Plaza and base building for the general public to enjoy throughout the July school holidays.
Carvings are made from either prepared designs or freehand. The toolkits are varied and contain everything from hand
chisels, saws and axes through to battery drills and chain saws. The carvings will be judged on creative artistry, how
well they involve the audience at Treble Cone and the relevance to the alpine surroundings. Each sculpture is required
to incorporate an empty bottle of ZUMWOHL Schnaps.
ZUMWOHL Company Director, Ulf Fuhrer believes Treble Cone is the perfect alpine setting for the ice carving competition,
“the stunning views will inspire the carvers and create a fantastic backdrop for the finished artwork. Strong
traditional Schnaps has been long-associated with European ski fields and we wanted to introduce the drink to New
Zealand’s mountains. 100% New Zealand made, ZUMWOHL was created for enjoyment and celebration,” he said.
The competition is open to everyone, teams of friends or family are permitted. Entrants should contact Treble Cone now
to register their expressions of interest. A $100 deposit is required to hold a block of ice, which will be refunded on
day one of the competition.
Judging by a panel for the ZUMWOHL On Ice will take place on Sunday 1 July with the winner announced on Monday 2 July.
In 2008 if German-born New Zealander, Ulf Fuehrer, wanted a proper drink of Schnaps, his only alternative was to import
