Crossing the borders with music
Embracing the best of New Zealand and Polish music, Auckland flautist Adrianna Lis will be joined by NZTrio's Christchurch-born pianist Sarah Watkins in a programme of classical, contemporary and film music in Christchurch on June 15.
The programme will feature music by Debussy, Poulenc, Chopin, and a new piece by Michael Williams, ‘When we fell’, that was commissioned for Adrianna’s debut CD. “Having heard Adrianna Lis in concert, I was excited by the prospect of writing for her and was thrilled to contribute a piece for her CD Dialogue/Rozmowa produced by Atoll Records” says Williams. Lis and Watkins will also perform Gao Ping’s Sonatina ‘Dialogue between wind and snow’ for flute and piano, another never previously recorded piece from her debut CD. Gao Ping, who will be attending the concert, is a renowned contemporary pianist-composer and Lecturer in Composition in the School of Music at the Canterbury University in Christchurch.
The concert will be held at St Augustine’s Anglican Church in Cashmere. A former student of Sir Maurice Till, Sarah Watkins says it will be an honour to perform again on the Steinway purchased by the Music Centre of Christchurch from the late master’s estate, and relocated to St Augustine’s from the Centre’s earthquake-damaged Barbadoes St site.
The concert is a cross cultural offering reflecting Polish and New Zealand social and musical history. Lis and Watkins use their music to promote the message of arts as a cross-cultural medium and showcase the diversity in the New Zealand arts that also reflects the multiculturalism of the New Zealand society.
Lis and Watkins will perform a second concert at in the Turnbull Room of the Distinction Hotel in Te Anau on Sunday, 17 June 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
