Inspiring Films Trust Wellington Screening
Inspiring Films Trust Wellington
Screening
As Hollywood homes in on New Zealand’s potential as a key player in the film industry a small group of dedicated people are making sure our unique voice is not lost as they travel around the country sharing and collecting stories and passing on their valuable knowledge and skills.
The Inspiring Stories Trust CEO and Co-Founder Guy Ryan and Project Coordinator Lu Davidson who have spent an exciting three weeks traveling the South Island visiting centres where sharing the craft of filmmaking screening local work have arrived for a very short rest period in Wellington before travelling the North Island on the Inspiring Stories Roadtrip.
They will be hosting a film screening of award winning New Zealand documentaries at the Thistle Hall on Thursday May 18 which will also be a celebration of the work they have done so far, at the event they will offer small talks about the films being screened and there will be nibbles and music provided as part of the koha entry.
The trust's vision is to harness the power of storytelling to provide hope of a better future. This is achieved by allowing younger New Zealanders to explore the processes of filmmaking and storytelling through an annual filmmaking competition as well as hosting film making workshops and screenings around the county.
TRUST BACKGROUND
While studying for his Masters at the
Science Communications Centre at Otago University Mr Ryan
joined another student Nick Holmes in making a 25 minute
documentary called Carving Our Future which followed four
young New Zealanders who were committed to leading community
projects in reaction to climate change and the environmental
challenges which is our country is facing.
The film
has been screened in over 30 countries worldwide and was a
finalist for the Best New Zealand Film at Reel Earth and the
BBC's Best Newcomer award at Wildscreen in 2010. It was
later released on 1000 self funded copies on DVD which were
distributed to schools and
community groups around
the world.
In 2010 Mr Ryan applied for the Vodafone World of Difference scholarship to ask for help in creating a charitable trust to allow further films of this kind being made after he had seen how Carving Our Future was a catalyst for conversation and action for those who had seen it.
After easter the 2012 road trip, the second of its kind for the trust. will start in Nelson. Last year the road trip was largely funded through the New Zealand Vodafone Foundation’s World of Difference Programme. This year The New Zealand Film Commission is the primary partner. Additional support has been provided by Creative New Zealand’s Creative Communities Scheme; YHA sponsoring accommodation; Spaceships sponsoring a vehicle; and the Interislander sponsoring ferry crossings.
The Inspiring Stories Charitable Trust also organises The Inspiring Stories Film Competition, a nationwide challenge with the theme: ‘Young Kiwis making a difference’. It is open to filmmakers of any age but targeted at secondary, tertiary and young professional audiences.
