SWEETMEATS
A lolly bag of stand up for all tastes
Meow café in Wellington – renowned for its organic and locally sourced menu will be offering something a little different with an upcoming comedy show Sweet Meats, from May 1st – 4th in the New Zealand International Comedy Festival.
The performance showcases new talent from the local comedy scene and covers a diverse range of talents; from the subtlety of well-placed one liners, to wry observational humor and mind boggling impersonations.
The six comedians are friends from the weekly Raw Meat Monday Comedy nights held at the Fringe Bar - evenings where new comedians practice and learn their craft in front of a live audience. “I was blown away by the talent that was coming through every week. Some of these guys haven’t even been doing it for a year, and yet they can get a whole room in hysterics” says show producer Hilaire Carmody. “These are tomorrow’s comedy stars and this is an opportunity for Wellingtonians to say they were there – that they saw them in their first festival show.”
Sweet Meats is usually a culinary term usually applied to dessert items such as preserves, crystalised or candied fruits as well as cakes and pastries. Butchers also use it to refer to tender parts of lambs’ brain that is breaded and fried. “Good stand up takes a lot of thought to make, you need brains. But at the same time when you watch a show it’s like a tasty pudding, it’s the thing that rounds off your meal or your day and you walk away feeling happy and satisfied,” says Hilaire.
The show runs for approximately an hour. Meow’s delectable dinner menu and well stocked bar will be open throughout.
