“Sergey Malov was a clear winner within a few pages of his Bartók Second Concerto, slinking fetchingly from its sinuous almost bluesy opening theme to volatile Magyar outbursts.” – William Dart, NZ Herald
Winner of the 2011 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Russian violinist Sergey Malov teams up with revered New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun for a 16-centre tour with Chamber Music New Zealand.
In 2011, Sergey won the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg before heading to New Zealand to score a hat-trick, winning the 2011 MHIVC top prize and scooping up the inaugural Julian Paul Anderson Award for best chamber music player and the Audience Prize.
The Chamber Music New Zealand Tour is a major part of the prize and Sergey said last year that he was looking forward to returning to New Zealand and touring throughout the country.
The New Zealand tour begins in Rotorua on Sunday 3 June, before heading to Hamilton, Napier, Palmerston North, Whanganui, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Auckland, Lower Hutt, Dunedin, Invercargill, Blenheim, Motueka and Waikanae.
Acclaimed New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun will perform with Sergey on the tour with NZTrio cellist Ashley Brown joining them to perform Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ Trio in Hamilton, Wellington and Auckland.
The varied programmes for the tour feature a breath-taking musical ride with music from Schubert, Ysaÿe, Brahms, Paganini and Bartók.
Equally talented on violin and viola, Sergey will perform Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata in D minor arranged for viola and piano in New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Christchurch, Invercargill, Lower Hutt, Motueka and Waikanae, while audiences in the rest of the country will be treated to John Psathas’ Gyftiko and Franck’s Violin Sonata in A.
“The tour by the Michael Hill International Violin Competition winner is a highlight of our concert programme every two years,” says Chamber Music New Zealand chief executive Euan Murdoch. “Sergey is a soulful and vibrant musician of deep expression and we are very much looking forward to him performing throughout the country in June.”
Sergey Malov and Michael Houstoun perform in 10 centres nationwide from 6-27 June as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2012 ‘Kaleidoscopes’ season, with six additional concerts in Rotorua, Whanganui, Lower Hutt, Blenheim, Motueka and Waikanae.
