Should Graham Henry Being Playing Off-Field Matchmaker for Ritchie McCaw?

A local matchmaker has challenged All Blacks coach Graham Henry for the job of locating a suitable partner for all Blacks captain Ritchie McCaw, saying it would be the “easiest job in the world”. However, she’s not holding her breath for a call.

Rosie Bowie, who operates Matchcompany.co.nz, a one-to-one matchmaking and dating agency for people seeking long-term relationships, said the light-hearted comments made by Mr Henry on radio needed to be seen in light of a wider trend towards single people electing to remain single.

“I’m certain that Ritchie McCaw would be inundated with prospective partners and our own agency has had clients saying they wanted to lodge ‘expressions of interest’. I don’t think that lack of interest is Ritchie’s issue at all.”

Graham Henry’s prowess as a rugby coach and Ritchie McCaw’s abilities as a rugby player may be unsurpassed, but mixing coaching and rugby with matchmaking was a potentially dangerous cocktail, she said.

“Perceptions of the rugby hero are one thing, but a good relationships involves a bunch of emotions and expectations, which are not necessarily the attributes that even a coach as experienced as Graham Henry might properly identify,” she said.

“While Ritchie McCaw’s ‘singleness’ is doubtless a subject of much intrigue and interest, particularly for someone with his profile, looks and abilities, it is also something that needs to be respected,” she said.

“I know Graham Henry’s on-air comments were obviously light-hearted but it appears that all sorts of people have been commenting upon the fact that one of New Zealand’s most eligible men is single and they are somehow unable to explain it, as if it were akin to an alien abduction.

“People can remain single as a matter of choice for a whole lot of reasons, all of which need to be respected,” she said.

Ritchie McCaw, she said, was placed in a somewhat invidious position of being a heroic figure which could often create relationship problems that made developing a serious relationship more difficult.

Matchcompany, which handles confidential one-to-one relationships and operates in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, has itself had clients seeking a date with the All Blacks captain.

“While we do sometimes approach or shoulder-tap individuals who we believe may be suitable matches for clients, we’re certainly unlikely to do so to Ritchie McCaw,” she said.

“I have little doubt he will find his Miss Right when he wants or needs to,” she said.

Mrs Bowie is visiting Christchurch this week seeking men in particular who are looking for long-term relationships in the Canterbury region.

She said that the agency has a large number of women who are looking for serious relationships in the Christchurch region. Next month she is also visiting Auckland to interview men and women seeking long-term relationships and helping to launch a new website that permits those wanting to avoid online dating sites to use a new, confidential web-based and personalized dating service.
