Broughton Delighted With Confidence-Boosting Victory

Haier Pulse Head Coach Robyn Broughton believes her team will take enormous benefit from their victory over the Southern Steel last weekend, as they look forward to their toughest challenge yet – taking on reigning ANZ Champions the Queensland Firebirds on Sunday afternoon.

“The result on Saturday means that we as a team know we can win and instills a belief and trust in one another,” she explained. “We don’t just dream it, we believe in it!

“I was pleased to see a number of improvements from the previous game against the Mystics. The team showed more composure and patience. Although we let the lead slip away from 10 at one stage down to just 5, that was when we needed our shooters to step up and keep us in front and they did exactly that.

“We have been focusing on improving our game plan in the build-up to Sunday’s game in Brisbane. We are going to ensure that we have the shooters covered and slow them down. Shooter Romelda Aiken at 1.96m always presents a huge challenge to defenders and we are working hard this week to find ways to deal with that.”

Broughton admits that she can’t believe that last year’s champions are 0 from 2 at this early stage of the campaign. “We’re not taking the Firebirds lightly, they are still the champions and they will be fixing what has gone wrong in their previous games. I am sure they will come at us and we have to make sure that we’re ready.”

She is also hoping that Katarina Cooper will be back from injury in time for Sunday’s showdown. “I would like her to be back to give us an extra option.”

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports 3 and don’t forget you can keep up to date with all the latest news from the Haier Pulse by visiting www.pulse.org.nz, Facebook.com/Haier.Pulse and twitter @HaierPulse.
