Seven Years of Dedicated ANZAC Day Programming

For the seventh year running, Maori Television will devote its entire 25 April broadcast schedule to commemorating ANZAC Day.

ANZAC DAY 2012 focuses on D Company in the 28th Maori Battalion, which covers Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Wairarapa, Taranaki and the South Island.

Starting at 5.45am on Wednesday 25 April at the Auckland War Memorial Dawn Service, coverage runs through until 12.30am the next morning with a range of live interviews, documentaries, movies and archival footage to screen throughout the day.

The channel will provide comprehensive live coverage from three locations, including two in the D Company region.

Maori Television’s Carol Hirschfeld and Julian Wilcox co-host from Auckland, Annabelle Lee-Harris and TV personality Sarah Bradley will report from Christchurch while Maori Television’s Matai Smith will present from Te Aute College in the Hawke’s Bay.

The legacy of Te Aute College, which was central in Maori war efforts, forms a significant part of the ANZAC DAY 2012 coverage.

About 250 former pupils served in the 28th Maori battalion during WWII, including Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery and gallantry.

ANZAC DAY 2012 features live coverage of the Gallipoli ceremony as well as a look at commemorations around the country and across the Tasman. New this year is an exclusive glimpse into the Special Air Service (NZSAS) ANZAC Day Service in Auckland.

A series of fascinating vignettes in which New Zealanders recount their tales of passion, bravery, humour and sacrifice is dispersed throughout the day.

Other special segments include appearances with military historian Dr Monty Soutar; Maori Television chef Pete Peeti cooking up a storm at the RSA’s Great Anzac Day Brunch; local drama “Strange Resting Places” and the documentary “Charlie Shelford: Rebel Hero”.

And as in previous years, Maori Television will bring the 2012 ANZAC Address to the nation, to be delivered by Maori academic and playwright John Broughton.

ANZAC DAY 2012 is produced by the award-winning Black Inc Media.
