Auckland Screen Industry Grows By $135m

Gross revenues for the Auckland screen industry have risen by $135 million according to new figures released this week.

Film Auckland Manager Michael Brook welcomed the newly released figures from the Statistics New Zealand Screen Industry Survey 2011, which saw gross revenues from the Auckland screen industry reach $2.297 billion last year.

“The growth is extremely encouraging for the sector as well as the city’s economy, and this result has been well earned by the outstanding quality of work the industry is doing in Auckland,” he says.

Mr Brook says the statistics are reflected by the feedback Film Auckland consistently receives from international screen producers working in Auckland.

“We are working every day with the industry, locally and internationally, and through their experiences here, they are reinforcing Auckland’s reputation as an outstanding destination for screen production. The producers we have spoken to in 2012 are hugely impressed with the standard of the industry here, both as a filming location and for post production.”

Mr Brook singled out the pure production and post production component of the Auckland figure which grew $50m to $773 million in 2011.

“That’s a significant jump because screen production generally is still feeling the effects of the global financial crisis in 2009.”
“It is also gratifying that productions are choosing to bring business to Auckland because of the quality of the industry even in the face of the high value of the New Zealand dollar.”

Auckland screen related businesses appear to have come through the crisis intact with no reduction in the number of businesses operating.

The latest figures reveal that Auckland is home to 51% of the country’s screen related businesses and the city generates 77% of national gross revenues.

Mr Brook says Film Auckland is targeting ongoing growth for the screen industry in Auckland, which is widely recognised as a key sector for the overall growth of the city’s economy.
