Public Art Development for Christchurch
Public Art Development for Christchurch
The SCAPE Christchurch Biennial of Art in Public Space has developed four events to encourage and develop the practice of Public Art in Christchurch city.
Spaces are filling fast in the SCAPE Public Art Development Workshop which has been developed specifically for Christchurch-based visual arts students, emerging, and mid-career artists. Held over two days, on 23rd and 24th April at CPIT’s Te Puna Wanaka, this practical workshop aims to cultivate the necessary skills to develop art projects for Christchurch.
As part of the SCAPE Public Art Development Workshop, independent Shanghai-based curator Biljana Ciric will present a free talk to which all are welcome. She will talk about the transition of public space in China from its place in traditional culture, to the appearance of public monuments during the Mao era and through current commercialisation of the public sphere. The talk will be held at CPIT’s Te Puna Wanaka from 6.00-7.30pm on 23rd April.
On the 24th April, SCAPE and Arts Voice Christchurch will host a panel discussion entitled “The River of Arts” creating new ways for The Arts to work in Christchurch’s public spaces.” This event will provide attendees with the opportunity to engage in a vital conversation around the role of The Arts in creating a culturally diverse, economically sustainable and socially vibrant city. Panelists include Dr Blair French, 7th SCAPE Curator, Coralie Winn of Gapfiller, artist Neil Dawson, SCAPE Director Deborah McCormick, Anthony Leighs of Leighs Construction and Tim Church, Urban Designer at Boffa Miskell and member of the Urban Design Panel with the Christchurch City Council. The event will run from 5.30-7.00pm at Te Puna Wanaka at CPIT.
Resene have just announced their commitment to the “Resene Art in the Streets SCAPE Christchurch Murals” project. Artists attending the SCAPE Public Art Development Workshops will have the opportunity to enter a design in a competition to design one of two large wall murals for Christchurch city. SCAPE are currently asking for expressions of interest from people who may know of high-profile large wall spaces which could be used for murals.
