Auckland Gay Film Nights Continue for Another Year
Auckland’s popular monthly gay film nights at Rialto Cinemas, hosted by Number 8 Films, are set to continue for another year thanks to a generous grant from the GABA Charitable Trust.
Number 8 Films, itself a registered charitable trust, was one of seven groups to receive funding this year. The $2,500 received will go towards the venue costs of staging the monthly event.
“Grants like this actually allow these film nights to happen,” says Number 8 Films co-trustee Andy Jalfon. “Venue hire, censorship and freight costs, and screening fees all add up pretty quickly and we’re very grateful to the GABA Charitable Trust, and our other key sponsor, Get It On!, for their continued support of these events.”
Since shifting venue from Galatos to Rialto Cinemas in September last year, Jalfon says the audience numbers have continued to grow.
“Nearly every month has been a sellout event, so we’d also like to thank those in the community, particularly our regulars, who have shown their support as well.”
The next two events in April and May illustrate the variety of films that have been showcased over the past year.
“Hard Pill” will be shown on Thursday April 19, the story of one man’s controversial decision to take part in a drug trial that he hopes will turn him straight. The gripping drama raises thought-provoking questions about where true happiness lies, and shows the ripple effect on the lives of other people when you try to change something fundamental about yourself.
On Wednesday May 23, there’ll be a special revival screening of the camp Village People classic “Can’t Stop The Music”, in which a hapless Steve Guttenberg plays a rollerskating record producer looking to put together a hip new singing group that crowds will go wild for. With the aid of his glamorous assistant, he goes in search of six “everyday” gents to fit the bill…
