NZ Curators Invited to Build Asia Links

NZ curators invited to build Asia links

The spectacular economic rise of Asia has placed South Korea, Japan and China at the cutting edge of the global contemporary art scene.

The Asia New Zealand Foundation (Asia:NZ), in partnership with Creative New Zealand, is offering three New Zealand curators the chance to visit contemporary artists and arts institutions in Korea, Japan and China from September 5-28, 2012.

The deadline for applications to reach Asia:NZ is 12pm, Friday, April 20, 2012.

The tour, the third of its kind, will include visits to the Gwangju Biennale and Media City Seoul in Korea and the Echigo Triennial in Japan. Participants also have the option of staying on at the end of the tour for the Shanghai Biennale in China (at their own expense).

“This is a fantastic opportunity for curators to learn a huge amount about the contemporary art of North Asia in a short space of time,” says Asia:NZ culture director Jennifer King.

“They’ll be able to visit leading museums, galleries and artist spaces, build their professional networks and explore possible future collaborations and artist exchanges.”

Asia:NZ will arrange formal programmes in each city, in collaboration with local art experts. The curators will be expected to disseminate and share information on their return to New Zealand.
City Gallery Wellington curator Aaron Lister, who participated in the 2011 tour, said the programme provided access to arts scenes in the cities visited at a level that New Zealand curators would not be able to organise independently.

“As a participant I could not ask for a better way to experience the arts and culture of Korea and China.”

Previous participants also said the tour enabled them to offer better support and advice to New Zealand artists wanting to exhibit in north Asia.
