MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Monday 2nd April 2012

FEATURE FILMS HELP DRIVE SCREEN INDUSTRY TO EARN NEARLY $3 BILLION

A big year in New Zealand feature films has helped the screen industry revenue rise to nearly $3 billion in 2011.

The latest Screen Industry Survey from Statistics New Zealand shows feature film revenue rose 15 per cent to more than $700 million –well above the overall screen industry increase of 4 per cent.

It found 35 feature films were completed in 2011 and more than a thousand businesses were contracted to provide services to film producers.

“These figures highlight the determination of those making local films and working on international productions to make great movies” says New Zealand Film Commission Chief Executive Graeme Mason. “It also emphasises the importance of the sector’s contribution to the New Zealand economy.”

The survey found half of all production and post-production sector income for the year came from film making.
