NZ COMEDY TRUST PRESENTS
CLASS COMEDIANS GRADUATION SHOWCASE
STARRING THE 2012 CLASS COMEDIANS

“Quit clowning around” is a statement many people have heard during their school days. But in all fairness, why? The NZ Comedy Trust is about harnessing that comedy spark of the class clown and teaching them how to make it into a career, and having a whole lot of fun on the way.

Take, for example, this year’s Class Comedians Tutor in Auckland, Rhys Mathewson - a model product of what Class Comedians is all about. Plucked from high school, fostered by a comedic tutor during the 2006 Class Comedians programme - and look at him now! A Billy T Award winner, a staple of the national comedy circuit and a regular on TV3’s 7 Days. Truly, this student has become one of the masters. Other great examples include; host of U Live Rose Matafeo and recently awarded the Sir Edmund Hilary Scholarship at Waikato University, Lewis Dean.

For over 10 years the Class Comedians programme has helped teenagers with a passion for comedy. The cream of the crop are selected and put through a series of free workshops where they learn the tricks of the trade – from comedy performance, sketch writing and improvisation, to marketing and promoting their own show. Along the way, some old hands of the comedy circuit will be providing advice to this brand new generation of comedians.

From there on in, it all boils down to the big event – the Class Comedians Graduation Showcase. After three months of intensive training, this is where everything the students have learned pays off. Taking their routines to the stage in front of an audience, it’s time for the graduates to prove that the old saying “no one likes a class clown” is, in fact, a lie.
