Remarkables Park celebrates action-packed summer
Queenstown’s Remarkables Park development has been host to a peak summer of community-focused events with more still to
come on the calendar.
Remarkables Park Communications and Projects Manager Olivia Porter said they were “delighted” with what they had been
able to put on for the community and were committed to ongoing support of local theatre productions.
The hugely successful Remarkables Market second season has featured a variety of special events including ‘Get into your
garden’ day at Labour Weekend, fire engine ‘sleigh’ visits from Santa, performances by local choirs, bands and
musicians, and a Valentine’s Day competition.
A highlight of the 2012 market season has been the new Remarkables Market Chef competition, set for an exciting final on
March 31. An annual scarf-making competition running throughout the month, and the by-now-famous Easter Bunny Hunt on
April 7, are still to come.
The market evolution has included supporting the local community by enabling five “wonderful” Wakatipu High School
students to help out at the weekly market to fundraise for a sister city exchange to Aspen earlier this year, Miss
Porter said.
Twelve more are now helping out at the market to fundraise for a French language trip to Tahiti in November.
The Red Barn at Remarkables Park, which normally houses the market, played host to the Summerdaze Teddy Bears Picnic for
the second year with hours of fun for little ones, including singing, dancing, games, a bouncy castle, story-telling,
face-painting and much more.
Remarkables Park were also delighted to be part of the 2012 NZ Mountain Bike Cup on The Remarkables Face that was held
in early January.
Secret Cinema had its second South Island showing at the Red Barn last month on a huge inflatable screen. Despite the
weather, some “serious stayers” lasted the distance to be entertained by old favourite ET before it headed on up the
country.
Zirka Circus brought its 2012 South Island tour to Remarkables Park for an extended season and entertained audiences
with amazing acrobatics and death defying motorbike riding, while next week it’s the turn of the play ‘The Bitches Box
and Mel Parsons’.
Following rave reviews of their South Island tour, the ‘The Bitches Box and Mel Parsons’ production features actors
Amelia Guild, Emma Newton and Mel Parsons, with the Wakatipu High School Tahiti fundraisers cooking up a storm on the
BBQ.
Miss Porter said Remarkables Park had also been delighted to be involved with the hugely successful Remarkables Theatre
Summerdaze Festival production of Greed, Gold and Grudges in the Queenstown Gardens, enjoyed by more than 800 people
over a summer weekend.
Upcoming highlights in May include Remarkables Park Limited’s joint sponsorship with Remarkables Park Town Centre, for
the third year running, of the Queenstown Showbiz annual production.
This year’s production is The Sound of Music, and Miss Porter said she anticipated a sell-out production of the popular
musical.
