Don’t Miss a Beat in Pulse of NZ Culture: STRIKE ELEMENTAL
Don’t Miss a Beat in the Pulse of New Zealand Culture

STRIKE ELEMENTAL: presented by Central North Island Arts Consortium
If you don't want to miss a beat in the pulse of New Zealand culture then don’t miss experiencing STRIKE Elemental on tour from Wellington in April. Presented by the Central North Island Arts Consortium STRIKE is a high energy drumming group made up of New Zealand's most outstanding percussionists, specialising in movement-based, choreographed percussion.
The Central North Island Arts Consortium is a collective of theatres from Hamilton, New Plymouth and Hastings and is funded by Creative New Zealand under its Regional Distribution Funding Strategy. This consortium presented three New Zealand theatre productions in 2011 and STRIKE Elemental is the first production of 2012 and the consortium is thrilled to be able to offer this performance at their venues, some for the first time. To complement the evening performances each venue will be staging daytime workshops run by classically trained Strike musicians who will bring their innovation and fresh approach to students and interested persons.
STRIKE Elemental is a percussive theatrical stage show exploring elements of our heritage, rhythms and environment, as well as the four elements. Harnessing the sonic power of water, fire, earth and the airwaves STRIKE Elemental is a breathtaking journey of sound manipulation, choreography, rhythmic intricacy and invention. Using hydrophones, pyrophones, dippophones, Bedford trucks, and even percussion instruments, it is an exhilarating and exciting experience.
Founded in 1993, STRIKE has worked with leading New Zealand composers such as Gareth Farr, composed its own pieces and collaborated with other musicians and groups from dancers to symphony orchestras. Pacific, classical and contemporary musical influences, combined with a movement and theatre-based presentation, make STRIKE unique in the world of percussion music. STRIKE's original music, dynamic presentation and creative flexibility have wowed, entertained, moved, surprised and impressed audiences within New Zealand and around the world.
‘First and foremost, they are world-class musicians. Once you've digested that, you can appreciate the group as innovative composers, riveting performers, physical theatre professionals, aesthetically-gifted choreographers and stamina-abundant athletes to boot.’ Theatreview
Very much a show, rather than a concert. Filled with movement, shadow, space, light, darkness, mime and — most gloriously — drums, STRIKE's Elemental is the best show I have seen from the talented quartet.’ Simon Sweetman, Dominion Post
‘Bring friends – you will want someone to turn to in the darkness of the auditorium to whisper approval frantically. Bring colleagues – you will not find a better example of team work, determination and awe-inspiring togetherness. Bring family – you'll have something to talk about for weeks to come and your granny will become an instant drumming enthusiast.‘
