MUSIC: AUSTRALIA

“A hilarious and strangely moving night.” ABC Sydney

Frantically juggling guitars, keyboards, synthesizers, a glockenspiel, a mandolin and more, two intrepid musicians revive the 70s classical-rock opus Tubular Bells, with Tubular Bells for Two.

Sydney musicians Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts have spent two years perfecting their show, in which they play more than 20 instruments in a carefully choreographed frenzy, to recreate the iconic Mike Oldfield album.

The story of the making of the original Tubular Bells is the stuff of legend: an 18-year-old unknown, Oldfield designs an elaborate piece of music featuring 27 instruments, including a set of tubular bells. He is discovered by a young Richard Branson and records the piece, playing nearly all of the instruments himself. Oldfield’s unlikely album, with an even more unlikely title, is the first release on Branson’s Virgin Records. Tubular Bells reaches No. 1 in charts around the world, selling more than 25 million copies.

Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts say Tubular Bells for Two is not a Mike Oldfield tribute show, more an energetic revival. Their aim: “an exciting and vibrant performance of an intricate piece of music that is as relevant today as it was in 1973”.
