Maori Television Wins at Maori Sports Awards

Maori Television’s coverage of the Rugby World Cup 2011 has won the sports media category at the National Maori Sports Awards.

The network took out the Maori Sports Media Award (Whakapaaoho Reo o Hinepukohurangi) for its bilingual coverage of the tournament on Maori Television and its 100 per cent Maori language channel, Te Reo at an awards ceremony on Saturday.

Maori Television played all 48 Rugby World Cup games free-to-air, with 16 games live including the final, on both channels.

Maori Television General Manager of Programming Haunui Royal said it is humbling to have won.

“It is another indication of the positive feedback we received for our coverage of the Rugby World Cup,” he said.

“And to have it come from the Maori community is extremely gratifying for Maori Television.

“That makes it really special.”

The 2011 National Maori Sports Awards ceremony was held at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau on 3 December.

The indigenous broadcaster was up against Ken Eruera (Ngati Porou) from Radio Ngati Porou and Harko Brown (Raukawa, Ngati Whatua) from Australasian Parks and Leisure Magazine for the Maori Sports Media Award.

The ceremony was emceed by Maori Television sports presenter and Rugby World Cup 2011 commentator Te Arahi Maipi, and will screen on Maori Television next Saturday, 10 December from 8.30pm.
