Tickets
are now on sale for the inaugural FIM New Zealand Speedway
Grand Prix at Western Springs Stadium in Auckland on March
31 - the first SGP round to be staged in the Southern
Hemisphere for almost a decade.
The race, New Zealand’s most exciting motorsport event next year, will pit the world’s top speedway riders against each other in the first round of the 2012 World Championship.
IMG’s Global head of Motorsports Rob Armstrong describes the event as “adrenaline on wheels”!
He says it will attract the world’s best speedway riders to New Zealand, in their quest to become World Championship. Hundreds of spectators and crew members will travel to New Zealand for the event while motorsport enthusiasts from throughout the country are tipped to converge on Auckland.
With preparations for the 2012 World Championship opener already well underway, FIM Speedway Director of Sports, Ole Olsen, is delighted to be taking the SGP series beyond Europe’s borders.
“I’m thrilled that the FIM Speedway Grand Prix is coming to Western Springs,” says Olsen. “Racing there was a highlight of my career and certainly racing some of New Zealand biggest stars in Ivan Mauger and Barry Briggs fuelled my appetite for the sport. It was always the ultimate to race these guys.
”New Zealand has produced some wonderful champions. It will again.”
Olsen says: “Taking the Grand Prix series to nations like New Zealand is vital for the future development of the sport.
“New Zealand is a country steeped in speedway history and I know the latest crop of Grand Prix riders are determined to make some history of their own by winning in Western Springs.
“The meeting has already captured the imagination of fans and riders everywhere. I’m sure the excitement will continue to build as we edge ever closer to the opening round of the 2012 SGP series.”
Springs Promotions principal Bill Buckley said: “We cannot wait to welcome riders and fans from all over the world to Auckland in March.
“We’re already working hard to put on an unforgettable night and ensure next year’s World Championship starts in style.”
