Disaster-Free! Kiwiburn 2012: Disaster Holiday
Where: Whakamaru Domain,
Mangakino
When: 18–23 Jan 2012
Kiwiburn, one of only a handful of officially sanctioned Burning Man events worldwide, will be held in the beautiful Whakamaru Domain from 18-23 January 2012.
Now into its 8th year, New Zealand's Kiwiburn is based on the legendary 25-year old festival held each year in the desert of Nevada, USA.
Kiwiburn is based on established Burning Man principles which encourage all attendees to participate in all elements of the festival from art and performance, to organisation and planning.
As with the Nevada burn, no money can be exchanged on site, people must arrive with everything necessary to survive five days of New Zealand sun. Unlike the desert event, Kiwiburn's paddocks lead to a lake, where you'll find many "burners" cooling off and Captain Lumos exploring the lake in his pirate ship.
There is so much that makes this event different to any other festival you might have experienced. There is no paid entertainment; participants build the event by themselves, for themselves. Expect interactive art installations, music, workshops, themed camps, fire performers and elaborately costumed Kiwiburners living out their dreams in a central North Island paddock.
This year's art theme, Disaster Holiday, was decided by the Kiwiburn community and reflects a year of earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes and the like, though the artwork takes a lighter approach and references retro-American State postcards. Both the Man and the Temple are designed with the theme in mind and are designed and built by teams of volunteers.
The much anticipated burns are a spectacular and unmissable experience with fire and drumming artists gathering to perform together. The man will be consumed by flame on Saturday night with the Temple following on Sunday night.
