In identifying the differences between the Maori and the English versions of The Treaty of Waitangi one must pay attention to the ‘kawantanga’ (governorship) which Maori offered to the British Crown and the ‘rangatiratanga’ (sovereignty) which the Crown came to assume that it had received.
