Culinary Quill Winners Announced
Awards spread across range of writers
Five different food writers have been served the accolades in the 2011 Culinary Quill awards announced in Nelson tonight. The awards are presented by the New Zealand Guild of Food Writers.
A sixth writer’s contribution to our culinary collection has also been recognised with the Chief Judge’s Award. Big names Al Brown and Annabel Langbein join Fiona Smith, Janet Dunn and Denise Irvine in receiving Culinary Quills.
Al Brown’s “Go Fish” published by Random House takes out the Book Quill sponsored by Chelsea Sugar. “The Free Range Cook” on TVNZ wins Annabel Langbein the Electronic & Digital Quill sponsored by Samsung.
The Cuisine magazine “Fresh Approach” spring cover published in September 2010 wins Fiona Smith the Visual Quill sponsored by Regal Marlborough Salmon.
The Tui Flower Recipe Writing Quill goes to Janet Dunn for “Mincing Words” published in the December 2010 edition of NZ House & Garden.
The NZ Venison-sponsored Culinary Quill for Journalism has gone to Denise Irvine for “On the eaten track” in the Waikato Times’ New Year’s Day 2011 edition.
Rose Carr’s “Healthy Habits That Could Be Harming You” published in the November 2010 Healthy Food Guide Magazine gains a special one-off Chief Judge’s Award.
Culinary Quill Awards chief judge is Australia’s Rita Erlich, who says she has been delighted by the quality of the entries over all categories.
“What's apparent is the commitment of New Zealand writers and presenters to their own country and their own readers. The voices are fresh, confident and well informed. In more than one category, it was a tough decision for all the judges to choose a single winner. That's always a good indicator of the quality of the work,” Ms Erlich says.
Category judges for the Awards were : Mike Valintine and Bob Ross (Book Culinary Quill), Ross McCallum and Graham Beattie (Electronic & Digital), Jane Evans and Lindsay Dawson (Visual), Delvina Gorton, Rosemary McLeod and Rita Erlich (Recipe Writing), and Geraldine Johns and Stephen Stratford (Journalism).
The New Zealand Guild of Food Writers president Lauraine Jacobs says the entries for this year’s Culinary Quills Awards reflect the passion, talent and expertise of New Zealand’s food writers.
“The Awards serve to recognize the work that food writers do in informing readers about food, which is vital to our health, our pleasure and most importantly, our economy. The New Zealand Guild of Food Writers is undeniably proud of the high calibre of the unprecedented high number of entries this year, and I congratulate all 39 finalists and celebrate the outstanding work of our five Culinary Quill winners”.
