A Big Weekend after a Triumphant One! Southside Arts Festival: 14 October - 6 November 2011
It was an incredible weekend to be a New Zealander as the mighty All Blacks lifted the Rugby World Cup for the first time in 24 years. Now it's approaching finals time for the Southside Arts Festival 2011, and with an amazing line up and incredible showcase of talent, this promises to be the festival's biggest weekend yet!
This week's highlights include:
Friday (7pm, 28 October) sees the eagerly anticipated The Mixer 2 Concert - featuring recently announced headliner Spawnbreezie performing alongside some of the finest pasifika talent the music scene has to offer - RIA, Three Houses Down, K One, Tyson Tyler, Anonymouz & the Hypnotics to name a few. Tickets are still on sale for this fantastic event but be quick they are selling out fast!
The Southside Gig II (9am, 29 October has been another eagerly awaited event - featuring the now traditional Hip Hop Dance showcases (featuring ABDC performers Street Kingdom) and Graf Art battles. This year will also see the debut of the "DJ Showcase", as Illegal Musick's CXL plays host to a number of hot up-and-coming DJ's from across the region.
Cover star of this past Sunday's Canvas supplement in the Herald on Sunday, Cat Ruka's New Treaty Militia(9pm, 28 October) will do its one-night only performance on Friday. Ruka has been travelling across Europe performing to large crowds including Berlin, and having wowed audiences first time around at the Tempo NZ Festival of Dance, looks to show Southside audiences her radical exploration of the Treaty of Waitangi.
For the more literary minded, this weekend sees two event that will grab the attention of all booklovers. Naked Voices of Pacific Literature (1pm, 29 October) brings together poets from across Auckland for this inaugural showcase of the year's best writing from MIT's brand new School of Creative Writing. Robert Sullivan, Head of the School of Creative Writing, will also be involved with Celebrating Maori Writers: Hinemoana Baker, Bradford Haami, Kelly Ana Morey (2:30pm, 29 October) - as these leading writers discuss their innovative works with Sullivan.
