Hamilton: Diverse tunes for Garden Place sound system

Diverse tunes for Garden Place sound system

25 October 2011

A diverse range of contemporary and classic music will add ambience to Garden Place from today.

The refurbished city square’s new sound system will be switched on today, and will play a broad selection of music from 10am to 4pm from Monday to Friday.

Garden Place Space Manager Greg Stack said the sound system playlist included American soul music, classical music, vintage rock’n’roll, contemporary pop and African grooves.

“The selection we have put together should include some music you know, and expose you to some sounds people may not be familiar with,” Mr Stack said.

“We hope people open their ears and minds to enjoy music they haven’t heard before.”

The sound system playlist also includes a selection of Hamilton and Waikato music, provided by the Hamilton Live Music Trust.

Hamilton Live Music Trust representative Nick Johnston said the trust was pleased to be able to showcase the work of local musicians.

“Hamilton City Council was very receptive to our approach, and we’re really hoping Hamiltonians will enjoy the music produced in their city,” Mr Johnston said.

Local musicians’ whose material features on the playlist include Kimbra, The Good Fun and Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers.

The use of the sound system is part of a month-long trial, and Garden Place business owners will be asked for their feedback.
