Exclusive mystery dining event generates $34,500 for the charity

Cantabrians opened their homes and their hearts for Ronald McDonald House South Island at the weekend, in an exclusive mystery dining event that generated $34,500 for the Christchurch-based charity.

Supper Club @ Home saw 23 of the city’s most beautiful homes and unique venues open their doors to a table of eight guests for the evening. Each home or venue was matched with a notable Canterbury chef, who was tasked with cooking a three-course meal.

MasterChef 2011 finalist Jax Hamilton, Tony Smith from the Crowne Plaza, Jamie Bennett from Taste Events Company, Marcus Weiss from Rotherhams of Riccarton and Gary Miller from Alchemy Restaurant were just some of the many talented chefs who not only donated their time and expertise, but also the ingredients needed to prepare the meals.

Participating guests did not know where they were dining, or who was to be cooking for them, until it was revealed by way of a random draw during a pre-dinner cocktail function at the Christchurch Casino.

A fundraising auction was also held on the night, with big-ticket items such as Rugby World Cup semi-final tickets, a high country hunting adventure and weekends away going to the highest bidder.

The money raised goes straight to Ronald McDonald House South Island, which provides accommodation and support to families with children in need of hospital care in Christchurch. Families are never charged for their stay.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the number of people that really got behind us on Friday night,” said Ronald McDonald House South Island general manager Emma Jones.

“The chefs and the hosts really went the whole nine yards in ensuring their guests had a memorable evening, and we are extremely grateful for their support. The feedback has been brilliant, with people wanting to see another Supper Club @ Home held next year.”
