Queenstown number one for food and wine in New
Zealand
The growing
reputation of Queenstown, New Zealand as ‘foodie heaven’
has been reinforced by a top award from the world’s
largest travel website.
The Southern Hemisphere’s premier four-season lake and alpine resort has taken out a prestigious spot in the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice 2011 Food and Wine Destination Awards for the South Pacific region.
Coming first in New Zealand and just behind culinary big-hitters Melbourne and Sydney, this firmly cements Queenstown’s position as a world-class food and wine destination. The awards are based on the most highly-rated food and wine destinations as recommended by millions of travellers from around the globe.
“We’ve long been known for our adventure, outdoor and scenic appeal, but this just goes to show that we satisfy all tastes when it comes to our award-winning food and wine,” said Destination Queenstown General Manager Marketing Graham Budd.
“Local producers, chefs and winemakers are passionate about this place, where outstanding produce sourced locally inspires some amazing menus.
“Restaurants large and small are everywhere, and it’s not hard to find one with stunning lake or mountain views, while the vineyards and winery restaurants on the outskirts of town are rated as some of the best in New Zealand.
“Our climate of hot, dry summers, cool autumns and crisp, cold winters makes for excellent grape growing conditions for our 200 vineyards which are producing world class award-winning wines.
“Even going for a coffee in
Queenstown is an experience, ideal for taking in the
spectacular views or some people-watching. In spring and
summer visitors love to dine outside, while in winter it’s
easy to find a cosy restaurant complete with a roaring
fireplace.”
Mr Budd said the award was testament to
the many food and wine producers and suppliers in
Queenstown.
“We feel very proud of this fantastic achievement and the international recognition of our local food and wine industry,” he said.
