Nelson Arts Festival lead up begins on Monday

Nelson Arts Festival lead up begins on Monday

The Nelson Arts Festival is set to burst into action with the annual Masked Parade on Friday October 7, but all next week there’s a preview of arty activity at Westpac Red Square at the top of Trafalgar Street.

Nelson City Council Arts Festival Director Sophie Kelly says the schools of the region responded fantastically to this opportunity to showcase student performance, filling the available slots in record time.

“There is everything from primary school choirs to college jazz, plus ukuleles and kapa haka,” she said. “With professional stage management and sound systems, this is a chance for the kids to shine and for the audience to see the fruits of months of rehearsals. We really hope people will make the most of this opportunity, support our young people, and enjoy the spring sunshine and the outdoor stage.”

Westpac Red Square runs from Monday 3 to Friday 7 October, 11am–2pm daily. Full programme details at nelsonartsfestival.co.nz

Ms Kelly says everything is on track for a boomer arts festival.

“The Festival Tent is up at Founders and our other venues are being readied for the influx of artists and technical crew,” she said. “Ticket sales have been great so far with some early sell-outs and we are expecting bookings from visitors in town for the Masters’ Games and the rugby.”

The Festival begins on Friday with the Masked Parade at 5.30pm, followed by the More FM Carnivale with special guests Midnight Youth courtesy of the Real New Zealand Festival.

The Nelson Arts Festival is produced by the Nelson City Council as an annual celebration for locals and an added attraction for visitors. Bookings at Everyman or at www.nelsonartsfestival.co.nz
