Chamber Music Tour of Acclaimed Ensemble and NZ Violinist

Acclaimed Ensemble Liaison Joins Renowned NZ Violinist for 10 Centre Chamber Music New Zealand Tour

"Half the fun of Liaison was witnessing their obvious joy at playing together." Herald Sun

Hailed by critics as "spellbinding and "a revelation”, Ensemble Liaison joins with renowned New Zealand violinist Wilma Smith for a 10 centre New Zealand tour in October and November as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2011 ‘Kaleidoscopes’ season.

Formed in 2006, Ensemble Liaison comprises three internationally acclaimed musicians: Timothy Young (piano), Svetlana Bogosavljevic (cello) and David Griffiths (clarinet), who are joined on this tour by renowned New Zealand violinist, and former New Zealand Symphony Orchestra concertmaster, Wilma Smith.

The quartet begin the tour in Dunedin on Tuesday 25 October, before heading to Invercargill, Christchurch, Wellington, Nelson, Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Palmerston North and New Plymouth.

The concert is a rare opportunity to hear one of the greatest chamber works of the 20th century: Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. Written by Olivier Messiaen while he was interned in a German prisoner-of-war camp for players he found among his fellow inmates, it was premiered on a bitterly cold January night in 1941 for 5000 fellow prisoners.

Quartet for the End of Time features in all 10 concerts. Programme One of Ensemble Liaison’s tour includes Beethoven’s Clarinet Trio in B flat ‘Gassenhauer’ and Bartók's Contrasts and will be performed in Dunedin, Invercargill, Auckland and Palmerston North.

Programme Two includes Haydn’s ‘Gypsy Trio’ and Brahm’s Trio for clarinet, cello and piano and will be performed in Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch; while the Napier concert features Haydn’s ‘Gypsy Trio’ and and Bartók's Contrasts.

"Going to an Ensemble Liaison concert is a bit like being invited to dinner with friends who love to cook. Clarinettist David Griffiths welcomes you with the warm, animated banter of a host who can't wait to serve the wicked, chocolaty dessert he has prepared. Except that the feast he's offering is music …" The Herald Sun (Melbourne)

Ensemble Liaison performs at Dunedin Town Hall on 25 October at 7.30pm; Invercargill’s Civic Theatre on 26 October at 7.30pm; Christchurch’s Middle Grange Performing Arts Centre on 27 October at 6.30pm; Wellington Town Hall on 29 October at 7.30pm; Nelson School of Music on 30 October at 5pm; Auckland Town Hall on 1 November at 8pm; Hamilton’s Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts on 2 November at 8pm; Napier’s Municipal Theatre on 4 November at 8pm; Palmerston North’s Regent on Broadway on 5 November at 7.30pm; and New Plymouth’s Theatre Royal on 6 November at 5pm.
