Cave Kids returns for adventures in October school holidays

After a sell-out first season, Cave Kids is back, offering a school holiday programme for adventure-seeking Kiwi kids, hosted by Discover Waitomo this October.

The three-hour dry caving session in Ruakuri Cave is like something out of the movies, allowing children the chance to explore caves and glowworms, search for treasure, find fossils and more.

This fun, educational programme is recommended for children aged between five and 12 years with two exciting tours a day - 10.30am and 1.30pm – from the 8 - 24 October 11. Due to popularity, bookings must be made 24 hours in advance and are available to limited numbers so everyone gets to enjoy their caving experience to the max!

Liz Lindsay, Discover Waitomo Brand Manager, is thrilled to launch a second round of Cave Kids, following a successful first season last July.

“The success of Cave Kids season one has reinforced how popular caving is with children and has inspired us to maintain an ongoing school holiday programme,” says Lindsay, who says the three-hour escapade provides children with a fun, Indiana Jones-type adventure.

“In preparation, kids start with a warm-up of awesome, cave-themed activities. Then it’s off to explore hidden parts of the caves on a guided 1.5km tour, sporting helmets and lights, before heading off the beaten track to find fossils, bones, buried treasure and a magic door that opens with special codes.

“They also get up close with glowworms, learn about cave formations and hear about cave myths, superstitions and ghosts.

“All they need to bring on the tour is comfortable walking shoes, a warm jacket and a sense of wonder,” she says.

Kids are welcome to bring their cameras to record the moment they discover the remains of ancient creatures, and they’ll also get their very own Cave Kids workbook to help them make notes on their treasure maps and activity sheets.

Parents, caregivers and children over 12 years needn’t feel they are missing out either, with the 1.30pm Cave Kids tour running at the same time as the Black Labyrinth tour with The Legendary Blackwater Rafting Company, meaning everyone can start and finish their activities together. And once the little adventurers have worked up an appetite there is a delicious combo meal deal available in the restaurant for the Cave Kids and their families.

Priced at $26 per child for a three hour fully supervised trip, this is true value for money. While parental supervision is not required, you are welcome to join your child’s adventure for $67 per adult, or take the whole family with a $165 family pass of two adults and two children.
